Frequently Asked Questions
How easy is it to get a job in mining?
Anyone that tells you that you are guaranteed to get a job after you have completed 1 specific course is most likely trying to part you with your money. That being said there are a few ways you can make yourself more attractive to a mining company or contractor. Mine sites need far more job roles than just Machinery operators and you may be suprised just how much you have to offer. We have prepared a New Starter Questionaire that may help so please go have a look at that.
Do I have to get any training done before I apply for a job on a mine site?
No. That being said the average dump truck job that has been advertised will attract hundreds of applications and the average traineeship advertised will literally attract thousands of applications. This means that you will have to work hard to stand out from the rival applicants in some way. Your best start is to complete our New Starter Questionaire to see what things we have to be able to work with. The minimum you will need prior to starting work will be your Standard 11 Induction and your coal board medical and if you have these they may put you at least above some of the applicants. The answer is still that you don't have to have these things to apply though.
Do I have to have a competency before applying for a particular job?
No, but it may help. When it comes down to it a company is more likely to take someone with experience over someone that has just gone out and completed a training course resulting in a certificate. This is why we have provided the New Starter Questionaire as it helps us identify where you have experience that mine sites are looking for. This having been said you will find that different sites will have different requirements with some having on-site procedures for those without the appropriate competencies. I know this may be a little cryptic but that is the way it is. Some sites have a program in place to ensure that you are competent to the national standard using internal means and some sites rely on you bringing a Statement of Attainment, then completing a Verification of Competency prior to being passed out to operate on site so unfortunately there is no real hard and fast rule.
