New Starter Flowchart

This questionaire is designed to help you enter, or progress into the mining industry. At any time, you can go back and answer an earlier question to see where the path takes you.

Do you currently have a job in the mines? No, I want to get a job in the mines Yes, I Have a job already
Have you got any experience on heavy equipment or have you worked in a Civil Construction environment, Coal Mine, Metal Mine, Quarry Site, Heavy Industry? No Yes
Without previous experience it may be difficult to get into the mining industry, so you need to be aware of that before proceeding. With the amount of positions that the Queensland State Government advertise that are being created in the next couple of years new starters are certainly getting a chance but it may take 6 months of continually applying for everything you come across. Also you should always be wary of someone that tells you that as soon as you have done this course you will have a job, just like everything else in life - If it is too good to be true it is usually isn't true.

Have you done any training to get into the mining industry before? This may include:

  • MI Skills GI Card
  • Mines Ready course
  • No Yes

Standard 11 course is usually the best place to start.   This Industry leading course has been set up in line with the Department Of Mines and Energy requirements and therefore is delivered in 2 separate components.

    Component 1
Which is what you will be completing if you book in through us today. This 3 Day Classroom based course is designed to give you a working knowledge of what is involved in working on a modern mine site. It takes you through the thought processes and paperwork that come with it as well as the Good and the bad. Upon Successful completion of this course you will be issued with a Statement of Completion and Partial Completion ID card.

    Component 2
When you get onto site present your Workplace Validation Booklet and they will help you collect the required evidence to mark off the practical.   Once complete, submit it with the required evidence to the RTO (training company from Component 1) and you will be issued a Statement of Attainment. NB: It is a DME requirement that no SOA be issued without supporting site based evidence.

For BMA sites, go to www.bmainduction.com.au

For Curragh, if you can get on as a visitor: RRTOA. If not, you will need to get in touch with the company that is bringing you on to clarify your final requirements.

For a list of all the sites that accept the Standard 11 please go to www.resourcesrto.org/sites

Another thing you wil require prior to getting a job on site is a Coal Board Medical. These vary greatly in price however usually if they are under $300 then you have done well. Unless you have a job already lined up I reccomend not getting the drug test done simply because it will expire very quickly and then they will require a new one anyway.

We hope this helps but sometimes the human touch is easier. If you have any further questions please call us directly on 1300 TRAIN 1(1300 872 461) and we will answer any queries you have in person.
